Canada is strengthened by immigration, respect for human rights, and being open to the world. Help us send a strong message to the Prime Minister to uphold this tradition!
Earlier this year, the Canadian Council for Refugees (CCR) wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney, urging him and his cabinet members to uphold their commitment to creating immigration and refugee policy that reflect our values of fairness, solidarity, and resilience (read our original letter here).
The concerns raised in that letter are as pressing as ever as the government continues the deep cuts to immigration levels announced last year and has proposed harmful new legislation like Bill C-2. If this bill passes, it will weaken refugee rights in Canada and undercut our obligations under the Canadian Charter and international law (see our dedicated call to action on Bill C-2).
Every day in our communities we see people show up for their new neighbours, welcoming newcomers as friends, colleagues and integral members of their community. CCR is working with our members and partners to ensure that attempts to divide us based on how recently we made Canada our home will not succeed and that broad public support for immigration and refugees is made visible to the rest of the country.
Together we are calling for a fair and balanced immigration system that is as welcoming as Canadians are. This can be accomplished if our government commits to:
- Reclaiming the narrative of Canada as a welcoming nation
- Reasserting Canada’s global leadership on refugees
- Ensuring the right to Asylum with Dignity
- Providing Status for All and safeguarding the rights of temporary residents and migrant workers
- Withdrawing from the STCA and abandoning Bill C-2
